We met at the announcement of the new channel, and then while overseeing Padres Magazine, a show he hosted, using features from the pre-game show. We co-hosted a special on Tony Gwynn’s Road to 3000, and I featured Jerry two times on the TV show One on One: in 1998 — the first time he shared in-depth for television about his life and Marine Corps service, and then in 2005 when he was honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuyJCIWyiqY&feature=share&list=PL667AD5D63643506A&index=2

He is featured in a chapter in my book — both my behind the scenes experiences and the transcript of the show.

Those are all tangible items to be viewed or read to remember Jerry. It’s how he was in the course of those productions and many chats in his booth overlooking the field, or at my home for special parties, or at our annual winter lunch, that I will treasure most. He was generous with his time, respectful of the job my team had to do for the interview or getting video. That’s a nice thing when sometimes high-profile people think they can steer the ship, and try to make the process difficult. Not Jerry. He was also genuinely interested in me, my life, my profession, my family. I so admired his military service, as my father had also served, in 3 wars, and was also part of the Greatest Generation, as Tom Brokaw so poignantly calls it. It seemed Jerry would be around another decade, as he was so fit and full of vim and vigor. But, while that was not to be, his legacy will live on forever. It’s especially important, I believe, to share who he was with the younger generations, so they understand the value of the qualities Jerry Coleman had.

We all can learn so much from him: his humility, honor, dignity, kindness and how he checked his ego at every door.

The last time I saw him was Opening Day 2013 when I went to the ballpark 1 month away from having my baby girl Lily. He was so happy for me. I hope he’s up in heaven talking with his old buddies from the Marine Corps, baseball, and maybe even meeting my dad.

Rest in Peace, Jerry Coleman. Rest in Peace.

I will miss you my friend.

Since writing my book, I planned to return to some of the stops along my TV journey including Texas and Oklahoma. A mini-bucket list! Recently, I was in Dallas for a conference and extended my trip north to Oklahoma. In Oklahoma City, I was the guest on The News On 9’s Sunday Morning newscast with Tammy Payne. Tammy and I met at my first TV job in Wichita Falls, TX back in 1986! I went through my video archives and put together a montage of some of our on-air appearances. What a hoot! Permed hair and shoulder pads — it was the 80s. To sit there on her set some 25 years later… talking about my experiences in sports and the book… was not only fun, but a real sense of pride; knowing our hard work and passion took us where we wanted to go, and for me, even places I had no idea I’d go… namely the world of sports. Thank you Tammy for your friendship and professionalism. To watch, go to www.newson9.com, click on Feb. 10 OR try this link! (Read on for more on the Tulsa stop.)

More Texas fun!

Tuesday was all about Tulsa Time! My friend and former colleague at KOTV, Terry Hood, interviewed me to get the word about my return and book signing at Steve’s Sundry that afternoon. I so enjoyed seeing several of my co-workers from my three years in Tulsa. Again, the archives tell quite the story — and certainly remind me of all the hard news stories I covered and the challenges of working in heat and cold, along with the serious nature of my beats including Education, City Hall and crime. What a contrast to my eventual world of Major League Baseball and the National Football League, but I am so grateful for those years. Big Al Jerkens and Coach Pat Jones hosted me on The Sports Animal Tulsa talking about One on One, Ted Williams, Tony Gwynn and more. As for the TV evolution? Here is a little montage of my work in Tulsa 1988-1991.

They come in every format — from a word or two, a quote or a religious reading. Sometimes, they’re just a feeling or an attitude. But nearly everyone has a philosophy they apply to how they live their life, a form of faith to what guides them in family, work and play. In 16 years of interviewing athletes, I have always asked the questions, “How does faith factor into your life?” Or, “do you have a philosophy by which you live your life?” Some answers are immediate — with an ownership and confidence that reflect how they’ve thought about this before. Other times, there’s some pondering, a processing, almost as if the question is pushing them to articulate something they either haven’t thought about before, or just had’t had to put into words! Either way, it comes from within, from their heart and their mindset.

Listen now to several MLB players answer the question, and perhaps it will offer some insight to both how they approach life and the game, and maybe even get you thinking about your personal philosophy.

Along with my faith, two practical sayings have guided me since I was a child. My mother’s mantra: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” And my father’s practical nature encouraged us to “Don’t wait. Anticipate.”

The Summer Olympics in London were amazing, and now it’s time for a new group of stellar and inspiring athletes to take the stage for the Paralympics. I admit, I was not familiar with the breadth and scope of the Paralympics until I interviewed three athletes this summer who were preparing for their London calling. They were at San Diego’s PETCO Park in July when the Padres invited Olympians based at the Olympic training center in Chula Vista to be part of a send-off. (Visit a previous July blog to listen to interviews with the other Olympians.) Please share the link to their short but significant stories (also on You Tube).

The three are of David Brown along with his guide Roland Slade. Listen to how they work together to train and now compete. Jeremy Campbell didn’t mention he was throwing the discus for the Paralympics — so I thought at first it was for the Olympics. It seems he doesn’t want the distinction, in some ways, and is determined to be in the Olympics in 2016 in Rio competing with what’s generally termed the able-bodied athletes. The person who set me straight on Jeremy’s status was Chris Clemens, competing in Track and Field. Jeremy’s story is incredible, too. Hint — he served his country and now he’s competing for the USA. Simply Amazing.

Adrian Gonzalez is an All-Star in so many ways. He has class, character, and he truly cares about the game, his team and fans. I’ve known him and his family since 2007, and featured him both on my One on One television show and in my book. He is generally quiet yet personable and kind, humble and unassuming yet confident in his abilities and gifts. That confidence and appreciation for what he can do on the field comes not only from his production but his faith.

Adrian has also been a good friend and supporter in my efforts off the field, participating in my Book Launch Charity event and being one of three special people (including Dave Roberts and Larry Lucchino) meeting fans and introducing me at a book talk and signing in Boston for the Great Fenway Park Writers Series. With all the demands on his time in Boston, he was loyal and thankful for how my work told his, his brother Edgar’s, and his family’s story over the years.

I share this especially for those who don’t know Adrian — yet — and who want to get to know him now that he’s with the Dodgers. Much has happened in the few years since he found a home at first base with his hometown Padres… and then with the Red Sox. Still, the chapter on him in my book and this excerpt below from the 2007 show at his parent’s home, offer insight into who he is, where he comes from, and his bigger picture perspective.

That he loved to watch Fernando Valenzuela growing up, along with Padres great Tony Gwynn, adds yet another special significance to his baseball journey. Enjoy… and even though you’re in the division rival Dodgers’ camp… welcome back west, Adrian. We’ve missed you.

Or what about the dream you still have, but are still waiting to pursue? Whatever your story, don’t wait too long to go after that dream! Here are childhood memories from several Major League Baseball players who had the seed of sports as a profession planted… even though it often began just as a love of the game.

As I am in London writing about and watching this international Olympics affair — with athletes from all corners of the world and every walk of life — I am also thinking about America’s game and all it inspires.

For 15 years covering the Padres and telling their life stories, I liked to start at the beginning. What were they like? Who influenced them? What did they learn along the way? What do they want to pass on to others? These questions and answers are not unique to baseball; each athlete, each person — especially once they’ve experienced a few years if not decades — can ask such questions and consider their own answers. This not only is a reflection, but can act as a conduit for change and moving forward, especially if they want their journey to go a different direction.

Here is the first installment: Early Advice Part 1

In the spirit of what I call, “The Good Sports Story” I intend to continue my approach with athletes of asking those questions that aren’t just about the box score or action on the field. That indeed is significant, but the back story helps explain the level and depth of their success and struggles, even, along the way. Of course, you can read more about this and many back stories and biographies in my book. Later in the series, I will also ask them what they think is important about doing more positive pieces, and hear how some are quite candid the negativity that often takes the spotlight.

So today I begin a weekly segment called “Boys of Summer.” I spent several days interviewing 18 guys from four teams: the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants, and the Chicago Cubs. Each team and the players I spoke with were welcoming, and thankfully, open and appreciative of the line of questioning, the topic of conversation.

Unlike 15 years with Channel 4 and some amazing photographers, I did the interviews myself without a crew — just a camera and microphone. Forgive a little shakiness, imperfect lighting, or if you can’t hear my voice quite as well as my guests’. Consider the concept we learned so well from the incomparable Trevor Hoffman, about how important it is to adjust and “re-invent” yourself as circumstances change. Storytelling is my passion, and I’m thankful to be able to make that my profession.

So we begin. I hope you will listen to the pieces all the way through. It’s important to let thoughts be expressed and completed. While they are edited down some, more than the essence, or just a quick soundbite, is here. Please share the site with your sports fan friends, young people you’d like to have hear from their “heroes”, or other athletes to show a mantra and mission to “Perpetuate the Positive. BE Part of the Good Sports Story.”
